Fibre workshop for alpaca fleece

Fibre workshop for alpaca fleece

2006-08-24

FROM Saturday 9 September a series of lectures, Fleece to Yarn, will be held at Inca Vale farm on the Malmesbury road outside Wellington by expert Felicity Hartley.

Lectures and demonstrations will be held in sorting, carding, blending, washing, moth proofing, comparisons of different fibres, introduction into the spinning wheel and a weaving demonstration.

On Sunday 10 September the focus is on knitting and design. This includes basic and extended principles of design, tension structure and adaptation, finishing techniques with fringes, tassels, fancy knotting and bobbles with a practical session.

Felicity is well known and respected in the fibre circles and has developed a niche export and local market.

A graduate of UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 1984, she has concentrated on the educational sector, running her own art centre, and was designer and manager of the internationally renowned Dombeya Wool Shop outside Stellenbosch for nine years, before her present operation Winelands Wool and Weaving.

Felicity has been involved in the alpaca industry from inception giving breeders advice and practical guidance.

On Saturday 30 September the focus is on felting and dyeing without expensive dyes, and the use of natural dyes. Felting principles and exploring the tactile experience of transforming wool into felt with the wet felting technique will be explored in a hands on workshop. No experience needed.

This felting workshop is run in conjunction with Maia Grotepass. Maia has been exploring wet and dry felting techniques since 2002 and received training from German felter Heidi Greb. She has run numerous beginner and intermediate felting workshops over the last four years.

The fee is R295 per workshop day, or R850 for all three. This includes light lunches, notes and introductory materials. Bring your own knitting needles.
