Where is councillor?
2006-08-24
THE ANC branch in Ward 23 notes with concern the absence of Councillor Marna van Eeden (DA), the elected representative of Ward 23, at the election of the ward committee on Wednesday 26 July.
According to Councillor James Solomons, the stand-in councillor for her, Councillor van Eeden has a “standing apology” with council.
On further investigation it was discovered that Councillor van Eeden has consistently failed to attend council meetings and neglected her duties as councillor.
It is clear to the ANC that Councillor van Eeden displays a callous disregard for her duties as a public representative and has acted flippantly to say the least.
Her total disrespect for the institution of local government and the people is clear for all to see.
At the community meeting on 26 July, the people of Ward 23 called on the Speaker of the Drakenstein Council to investigate the action of and conduct of Councillor van Eeden in terms of the Municipal Code of Conduct for Councillors.
We are confident that there is prima facie evidence to justify a formal investigation as public funds are being abused.
Either Councillor van Eeden should resume her duties with immediate effect or do the honourable thing and resign.
Harlan CA Cloete
Koos Louw, DA caucus leader in Drakenstein, replies:
The DA is aware that Councillor van Eeden and her husband are investigating business interests elsewhere. Should this materialise, they will leave Paarl.
In the interim, the DA has arranged that Councillors James Solomon and Sammy Andrews handle ward matters.
Councillor van Eeden is expected to attend the Council meeting on 29 August.
Should van Eeden be forced to resign, the DA will inform its supporters timeously. Meanwhile voters are requested to ignore the transparent political games of the ANC.
