`We don't want Metropole
2006-08-31
THE Drakenstein Council does not support the proposed redetermination of the municipal boundaries.
At Tuesday’s Council meeting, Mayor Charmaine Manuel tabled the recent circular from the Demarcation Board to include Drakenstein and Stellenbosch in the Cape Metropole.
Council resolved that the Mayor and Speaker, together with Whips of political parties and the Municipal Manager, should engage Stellenbosch and Cape Windelands District Municipalities on this matter as a priority.
Councillors will also collectively and individually engage civil society to respond to the proposals.
The Council also debated the question whether Drakenstein had the internal capacity or whether outside expertise should be engaged to guide Council with the technical issues within the limited time frame of 30 days allowed for response.
It was decided to engage a consultant to help with the process, as comments must be submitted by 19 September.
A proposal by Councillor Koos Louw (DA) that Drakenstein asks for an extension of the deadline, was also accepted.
Comments must reach the Demarcation Board before 19 September at Private Bag X28, Hatfield 0028, Fax (012) 342-2480 or robert @demarcation.co.za.
