IN one month, since the Paarl police launched their Operation Toxic Algae, 273 suspects were apprehended and arrests were made for crimes related to drugs, alcohol, contact and property.

By means of the Morpho Touch fingerprinting system, 26 suspects were linked with outstanding crimes and arrested by the Paarl Detective Unit.

Stolen goods were retrieved with follow-up arrests while 39kg of dagga, 23 mandrax tablets, 440 bottles of liquor and six firearms were confiscated.

“These measures led to a decrease in priority crimes,” Paarl’s media official Insp Julia Claassen said.

At the same time awareness programmes were launched by police officials at 18 local schools regarding the safeguarding of firearms, as well as drugs and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, and violence against women and children.

“The youth is encouraged to become aware of the consequences of drug abuse, to improve their self-esteem and to participate in community activities and community-based programmes,” Insp Claassen said.
