Dart players pick up speed for main finals this weekend
2006-09-07
THE local dart players of Drakenstein Darts Association looked good at the finals of the men’s C-division competition of the Boland Darts Board of Control that was held recently.
A poor start to the season almost saw them being put out of the running, but a wake-up call came just in time.
Saturday before last they delivered an outstanding performance by thrashing their opponents from West Coast 11-0, Helderberg 9-2 and Tygerberg 9-2.
Just as things seemed to be going their way, however, they were stopped in their tracks by a more dedicated and disciplined Tygerberg side who beat them 6-2 in the finals.
In the veteran (over 50 years) division it was the team of Tygerberg B who beat all their conterparts - Drakenstein 5-2, Helderberg 6-1 and Tygerberg A 4-3.
In the final they were again too strong for the side from Drakenstein beating them 4-2.
The women’s team restored the honour of Drakenstein when they became the champions in their division by beating Tygerberg 4-1 in the final.
Their onslaught was led by Denise Nicholson and Barbara Solomons when they outplayed West Coast (6-1) and Tygerberg (5-2) in the round-robin matches.
A total of six 180’s were thrown by Johan Swarts (2) and Leon van Rooyen (West Coast), Lorenzo Arendse, Jacques Manus (Drakenstein) and Frank Samuels (Helderberg).
The finals of the Men’s A and B divisions as well as the Women’s A division take place in Paarl on Saturday.
