Contest for giant pumpkin growers
2006-09-14
THE Boland Giant Pumpkin Growers Association (BGPGA) was established recently with the intention of bringing a number of giant pumpkin growers together and to promote this exciting new sport in the Boland region.
Charlie Cockerill from Hopefield, holds the current South African record with a giant of 308kg grown in 2004. Growing giant pumpkins is a very competitive sport particularly in the USA and Canada, where a massive pumpkin weighing in at a record 668kg was grown in 2005.
The highlight of the season will be a competition in March where growers can enter their pumpkins and qualify for exciting prizes - the first for the Boland Wine Region.
The special variety of seeds are available locally at the Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Paarl, Wellington and Franschhoek tourism bureau free of charge and should be planted round about 1 October.
