Municipal area could be halved
2006-09-14
THE proposed redemarcation of the Paarl/Stellenbosch municipal areas currently being investigated by the Demarcation Board has upset many residents of Paarl, Wellington and Stellenbosch.
They object to the prospect of losing their rural independence to the distant Cape Town Metro.
To top it all, half the current Drakenstein and Stellenbosch municipal areas are not part of this proposal.
According to the map on the Board’s website, only the western sections of the two municipalities, including the urban areas of Paarl, Wellington, Klapmuts and Stellenbosch, will be incorporated into the Cape Town Metro.
Thus the current municipalities will be cut in two in the vicinity of the Berg River and Simonsberg.
The north-eastern parts of the existing Drakenstein municipal area, including Saron, Hermon, Gouda and Klein Drakenstein, remain outside the boundaries of the City in this proposal, and would probably have to form a new municipal area in conjunction with the eastern half of the Stellenbosch municipal area (Franschhoek, Banhoek and Groot Drakenstein).
