A HASTILY assembled rugby team of Paarl performed well at the Toyota School of Excellence Vodacom u.19 Sevens Tournament that was held at Florida Park recently.
It was the first time that a team of Paarl participated in this annual event.
The assembly of the team was the initiative of Rudolf Francis, a teacher and rugby coach at Paulus Joubert Secondary School.
He singled out some talented school players and invited each one personally to join the team.
Although they only practised a couple of times before the tournament, the Drakenstein team managed to win the plate competition.
They beat the team of Northerns 25-15 in the plate final.
The players in the team were Omar Moerat, Sadiq Samaai (both of Paarl Boys’ High), Elrich Philander (New Orleans Secondary), Bonani Mganisa, Bongani Mangena, Thamsonga Teni, Wanga Ma-Awu (all from Desmond Tutu Secondary), Chris Pietersen, Cheslin Fredericks, Donovan Hougaard (k), Gueron Kulsen and Lorenzo Barends (all from Noorder Paarl Secondary).
Kulsen was voted the Drakenstein team’s player of the tournament. The team was coached by Martin Kriel and John Philander.
