Bawsi lashes out
2005-03-04
THE president of the Black Association of the Wine and Spirits Industry, Nosey Pieterse, has threatened to withdraw from the SA Wine & Brandy Company if it does not attain a greater stake in SAWB.
Pieterse lashed out the industry at the launch of the Bawsi Trust for the agricultural sector.
"As an organisation, Bawsi is seriously reconsidering its continued participation in the SAWB.
"We insist on at least a 50/50 representation, which will allow for the traditional three white chambers, a labour chamber, a community chamber and a chamber for black business.
"It will only be through organisation and mobilisation that we will achieve our economic emancipation," said Pieterse.
Bawsi was established in 1998 with the primary objective of transforming the wine and spirits industry so that it is representative of South Africa in terms of ownership, control and skill.
Pieterse said among the challenges facing Bawsi was the living conditions of farm workers.
"Farm workers are one of the most vulnerable categories of workers. Unscrupulous farmers can determine the workers' religion, politics and their standard of living. They are there for farmers."
