Boost for local sport planned

Boost for local sport planned

2006-09-14

THE Drakenstein Youth Council is to launch the Rocky Mofokeng Sports Club to boost sports in Mbekweni at the Mbekweni Community Hall on Monday night.

The club will drive the five sporting codes soccer, athletics, rugby, netball and basketball, also in schools. The idea is that other sports be incorporated in due course and in a phased manner.

It is hoped to roll out this structure to disadvantaged areas like OR Tambo, New Rest and Van Wyksvlei if it proves successful.

It is hoped to address the rise in crime and alcohol abuse, gangsterism and poor health in this way.

The Drakenstein Youth Council considers the investment in sports to be an investment in a safer, healthier and prosperous Drakenstein.

The Club is not replacing any sports forum, but is designed to look at effectively increasing general participation and consciousness in sport and the opportunities, to identify talented youngsters and to afford them a platform to participate competitively.
