Festival of firsts

Festival of firsts

2006-09-21

THIS weekend Paarl will host the first Cultivaria festival - truly a fest for the whole of Drakenstein. This cultural fest will include four community shows made possible by a
donation from the Drakenstein Municipality.

The festival will be multicultural and
multilingual. To give it a truly unique character,
there will be sport, xtreme sport, visual arts,
drama, classical music, ballet, comedy, writers and popular music.

Activities will centre around the Faure Street Stadium, where festivalgoers can enjoy refreshments, while most productions will be staged at halls in the vicinity.

Well-known performers in Paarl over the long weekend include David Kramer, Laurika Rauch, Chris Chameleon, Dozi, Mathys Roets, Coenie de Villiers, Theuns Jordaan, Pedro Kruger, Elize Cawood, Bo Petersen, Rina Hugo, Marga van Rooy and DNA Strings.

Also on the cards are a pop concert tonight at Gymnasium High, the longest dinner table (in Main Street), and a gospel concert Sunday night.

The community shows will be at the Boland Park Cricket Stadium, starting on Friday night when the well-known group Mafikizolo will hit the stage.

Together with the vibrant cast of the musical extravaganza, Out of Africa, and the well-known group Jamali, this will be an event not to be missed (entry R10).

From Saturday entry is free. The fun starts at 12:00 with choirs and bands, a ventriloquist (12:30) and magician Wolfgang Riebe (16:30), ending with Kevin Leo & The Sweetvoice Masters (from 18:00). Egoli Stars will visit the stadium.

On Sunday the free entertainment moves to the sports fields in Gouda, starting at 15:00 with local gospel singers. On Monday the weekend closes with another free concert at Boland Park Cricket Stadium from 10:00 featuring bands, coons, dance groups and the production Born in the RSA 3 (14:30). The programme ends at sunset with Afro jazz.
