Three locals in SAB soccer league

ONLY three soccer clubs of the Drakenstein area managed to qualify for SAFA Boland’s Castle League.
Double V United Football Club, Mbekweni United Football Club and Mbekweni Cosmos Football Club will take part in this league which gets under way on 30 September.
Double V United surprised both friend and foe when they beat View of Hope for the last spot in the SAB League.
Having finished in the eighth position in the red group, Double V had to play two play-off matches against their counterparts of the blue group, View of Hope.
The Paarlites were dealt a thrashing 3-0 blow in their first encounter at Boy Louw.
They showed great character, however, after returning the favour and beating the Worcester team at home 3-0.
Robert Mdu scored a hat-trick for the visitors.
The draw made Double V the ultimate winners as they had more log points (58) than View of Hope (56) going into the play-offs.
The nation wide semi-professional SAB league would have kicked off this weekend, but SAFA National have called a meeting in Johannesburg with the presidents, secretaries and vice-chairmen of the respective provinces to discuss last minute logistics concerning the tournament.
The first fixtures of the competition will thus be postponed and played in one town to make the launch of the tournament a truly spectacular event.
Of the three towns represented in the Boland Castle League, Stellenbosch (Winelands) has the best representation with 11 clubs. Paarl (Drakenstein) has three, with Worcester (Breedevallei) being represented by two clubs.
The flip side of this situation, however, is that Drakenstein has the most clubs playing in the lower Boland Super League which kicks off early next year.
These teams will however not rest on their laurels for the rest of the year, seeing as the inaugural Mayoral Cup tournament kicks off early in October.
All clubs in Drakenstein will compete in this competition which is held for the first time under the auspices of Drakenstein mayor Charmaine Manuel.
Clubs playing in the SAB League will enter their B sides in the Mayoral Cup.
The official launch of the Mayoral Cup takes place on 29 September. Meanwhile, the competition of the Drakenstein Local Football Association is still under way between the lower ranked clubs of the region.
