Ladies hit the road
2005-03-04
THE Roads Directorate at the Cape Winelands District Municipality has appointed its first group of women workers.
These 25 women will be joining 200 men on the roads to work in teams with men in Paarl, Robertson, Worcester, Ceres and Stellenbosch.
Amongst other things they will be doing daily maintenance activities on the rural public roads such as maintaining guard rails and road signs, drainage maintenance and patching and sealing of open cracks on the roads.
Three of the women, Gerthey Abrahams, Colleen Parring and Charmaine Harris, are from Paarl.
"I am so grateful for the job," said a happy Gerthey. Added Colleen Parring: "I was desperate for work," added Colleen Parring. "Now I also have an income," while a shy Charmaine Morris said: "We will try our best."
The women wear their smart new uniforms - bright orange overalls with yellow reflector vests and safety shoes with pride.
Roads superintendent Alfred Williams is very optimistic about the new addition to his workforce.
"Women have proven to be a real asset in road departments.
"They are dedicated workers and overall production increased and absenteeism decreased where they joined work teams."
