Paarl cricket set for good season
2006-09-28
THE Novel Paarl Cricket Club finished their pre-season preparations on a high note after beating both Sussex and Mossel Bay this weekend.
Paarl travelled to the Southern Cape for these matches and would have gained confidence in their wins away from home.
Against Sussex Cricket Club on Saturday, Novel Paarl won by 70 runs after scoring 227/9 in 45 overs.
Godfrey Stevens and Carlo Crotz shared an opening stand of 67 runs in 12 overs before Crotz (28 4x4) lost his wicket.
Stevens (32 4x2), Lee-Roy Walters (42 4x2) and Alfredo Adams (36 not out 4x3, 6x3) were the other batsmen who impressed the selectors.
The home team was bowled out for 157 runs in 38 overs. Newcomer, Hilroy Paulse (3/9 in 6 overs) was impressive with the ball.
Other bowlers who also caught the eye were Godfrey Stevens (3/18), Clint Philander (2/15) and Cameron Cupido (2/7).
On Sunday the Novel Paarl team played their first ever day and night match against Mossel Bay Cricket Club.
The home team battled against the pace of Paulse and Philander, managing to only score 101 runs in 29 overs.
Paulse (6/23) ripped through the batting line-up sending one to hospital with a cut above the eye after he ducked into a short delivery.
New spinner, Ockert Erasmus (3/5) also showed that he is a prospect for the future. The Paarl batsmen struggled to get to grips with the playing conditions. Only Lee-Roy Walters (37 not out 4x6) settled in after initially struggling.
Paarl won by four wickets after scoring the winning runs in the 30th over.
Lee-Roy Walters and Hilroy Paulse were appointed as Players of the Tour after their match-winning performances in the two matches.
Sunday before last Paarl (103) drew with St Augustine’s Cricket Club in a 30 over match.
Paarl Cricket Club’s first matches of the 2006/7 season are: Paarl I (home) and Paarl II (away) against Vredenburg/Saldanha, Paarl IV (home) against Khayamandi. The third team has a bye.
The club is having a Steak Platter sale on Saturday, 30 September, from 14:00 at the clubhouse. Price is R35 per platter. A disco will also be held at the clubhouse from 21:00 (9pm) with DJ Genie of Heart 104.9FM. Entrance for the disco is R10.
