THE senior section of the inaugural Mayoral Soccer Cup tournament gets underway this weekend with the official launch taking place at the Boland Cricket Stadium tomorrow evening.
The tournament where all the soccer clubs from Drakenstein will compete, kicked off last weekend with a junior tournament at the Boy Louw fields.
The final of the u.13 division was played between XI Ideas and Paarl Soccer Club, with the former winning the match. In the u.15 division the tables were turned with Paarl beating XI Ideas in the final.
The senior tournament will take on the format of the World Cup Tournament and will kick off on Wednesday. Group matches will be played every Wednesday and Friday until 27 October.
The venues for these matches will be Mbekweni Rugby and Soccer Stadiums, Boy Louw Soccer Field and Weltevrede Soccer Field.
All matches will be played at night with starting times being 19:00 and 20:30.
The quarter finals (last 16) will take place on Saturday 4 November, with the semi-finals taking place on 11 November. The venues for these matches will still need to be decided.
The finals promise to be among the biggest events on the Drakenstein sports calendar and will take place at the Dal Josaphat Stadium on Saturday 18 November.
The event will start with a road race in the morning, organised by Boland Athletics.
The stadium will also be hosting a carnival which will include rides, stalls and many more attractions for the whole family.
Parachuters will start the proceedings at the main stadium before the kick-off of the final matches.
