Local restaurants shine

LOCAL restaurants shone at the recent 2006 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards.
Top of the log with awards for excellence were Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek, and Paarl restaurants Marc’s and Bosman’s at the Grande Roche Hotel.
They were among the 21 restaurants that received these awards in the Western Cape, by far the most in the country (Gauteng had six “Awards of Excellence” and Kwa-Zulu Natal had two).
Platinum Awards were presented to Rhebokskloof and Bistro Allegro (Grande Roche Hotel), while Gold was awarded to the winelists at the Franschhoek Hotel and Spa, and Reuben’s, also in Franschhoek.
The Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards encourage food and wine-serving establishments to improve the standards of the wine selection they offer to their patrons.
The award categories and competition requirements are in line with global market trends and Diners Club International’s ongoing contribution towards service excellence in the hospitality and tourism industries.
Convenors of the Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards are former award-winning restaurateurs Michael Olivier, now wine and food specialist for Pick ‘n Pay, and Mike Bampfield-Duggan of Wine Concepts in Cape Town.
The panel of judges for the 2006 Winelist of the Year Awards included Cape Wine Master Clive Torr, well known restaurant judge Lannice Snyman, food writer and sommelier Arnold Vorster, wine judge and writer Angela Lloyd, wine writer and Cape Talk Radio presenter John Maytham, food and wine writers Kim Maxwell and Myrna Robins, and wine trainers Catherine Bouttell-Coackley and Dr Jim Coackley.
