THE season got off to a good start for at least two of the three Drakenstein soccer teams competing in Castle League this weekend.

Double V United of Paarl won Glen Eagles of Stellenbosch 1-0 in their opening match on Saturday.

All 16 teams competing in the league played their first matches in Worcester on Saturday with an opening by the mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, Clarence Johnson.

The matches were played in windy conditions, which made attractive
soccer virtually impossible.

In spite of the difficult playing conditions in the first half, Double V had numerous scoring chances. Strikers Elrick van der Westhuizen and Robert Mdu could, however, not find the back of the net.

Solid defence by Double V captain Yulin Benans prevented a sure goal when one of the Glen Eagles strikers managed to outsmart the keeper Bevan Christiaan. The teams went to rest with the scores on 0-0.

In the second half Glen Eagles wasted many chances by kicking all their attack away and trying to score long-range goals.

Double V on the other hand played positively and launched their attacks from close-up thanks to short, accurate passes.

This tactic proved the right one when Mdu scored late in the game to secure the victory for the Paarlites.

On Sunday Double V received an easy three points after Worcester Spurs did not show up for the match in Paarl.

Double V now has six points following the first two matches giving them the second position on the points log.

Double V face Khayamandi Hotspurs on Boy Louw at 15:30 on Saturday.

Mbekweni United thrashed Nietvoorbij FC from Stellenbosch 6-0 in their opening match.

The Mbekweni team showed from the onset that they mean business and led 3-0 at halftime, thanks to a hat-trick of goals by Xolisani
Qambela.

In the second half the introduction of Sivuyile Tozo saw him score a further two goals within 10 minutes.

Captain Mzoli Bangani put the match well beyond the grasp of Nietvoorbij when he scored a final goal in the 80th minute.

This excellent victory against one of the top teams in the league bodes well for Mbekweni United.

On the flip side of the coin Mbekweni Cosmos had to settle for a 2-1 loss at the hands of Maties.
