Paarl seccies squeak through for league title
2006-10-05
ENTERING their penultimate home game against Strand (56) the second team of Paarl Rugby Club were trailing the logleaders by five points.
Losing the previous game against Belhar (17-20) the team knew that only a full 10 points from the last two games would at the very least have them draw for the cup.
Paarl won Belhar 22-8, and the four tries scored by Regardt Horn, Lonnie Nel, Gerhard Brand and Rocky Watson ensured the bonus point victory they so dearly sought.
With one game to go, Paarl faced Strand United away whilst Strand hosted Franschhoek at home.
In the Paarl match the first half went by pointless.
The second half however started like a scene from a horror movie with United scoring two intercept tries within the first 10 minutes.
With 20 minutes to go and trailing by 14 points Paarl took control of the match with the forwards laying down the gauntlet.
Paarl’s front row, Lambert Myburgh, Leopold Frechou and Jaco du Plessis resembled a blue tidal wave as they swept all opposition aside.
In the end their effort ensured a convincing 31-14 win for the visitors with tries being scored by Victor Strydom, Myburgh, Dawie van Wyk, Frechou and Abrie Jacobs.
Byron Goliath had success with three conversions.
Strand’s 9-3 over Franschhoek United was not sufficient to claim the top spot and the league title, missing out by a point.
