THE official launch of the Mayoral Cup Soccer Tournament was met with a buzz of excitement on Friday evening.

The planning and organisation leading to the inaugural tournament which is held under the auspices of the Drakenstein Municipality and the executive mayor, Charmaine Manuel, impressed everyone present at the function.

The two huge trophies up for grabs (for both the men and women winning team), professional introduction DVD screening as well as the fully function website promoting the event showed the seriousness and thought that went into the planning and staging of a successful event.

“This event is not only an sporting event but it is also the means of getting our youth out of the dangerous streets and bring them together in doing something constructive and developmental. This is where we wish to produce the Ronaldinhos of Drakenstein,” the mayor Charmaine Manuel said.

She added that the tournament must serve as a launching pad for young talented players in the Drakenstein regions who might even go on to play in the 2010 World Cup Soccer Tournament hosted in South Africa.

A total of 32 of the Drakenstein teams will battle it out in the men’s division with four women’s teams also competing for honours in their own competition.
