Paarl shines early
2006-10-05
THE Novel Paarl Cricket Club started the new season on a high as all three teams won their matches in the various competitions of the Boland Cricket Board.
After being sent in to bat in cloudy conditions by the visiting Vredenburg/Saldanha captain, the home team scored a moderate 172 runs for the loss of nine wickets.
The Boland A wicketkeeper, Lee-Roy Walters, and Robin Andrews, Boland u.19 Schools batsman, steadied the innings of the home team after both opening batsmen were back in the pavilion with the score on 19.
They shared a partnership of 74 runs before Andrews (30 4x3) was brilliantly run out with a direct hit from the boundary.
The Paarl batsmen struggled to maintain a run rate of three runs per over as the bowlers used the weather conditions to their advantage. Walters (61 4x7) was eventually caught by the keeper with the score on 121/4 after which the next couple of batsmen could only manage another 71 runs in 13 overs.
Former Titan’s player, Shane Summers, took 3/21 in 12 overs while Dewald van Wyk (2/38) is the other bowler who caught the eye.
The visitors’ innings started disastrously when debutant and Boland A bowler Hilroy Paulse got rid of three of the first four batsmen in quick succession.
The team from the West Coast was stumbling on 12/3 before Summers and Quinton Kannemeyer shared a partnership of 75 runs for the fourth wicket before Kannemeyer (22 4x2) was trapped leg before wicket by another newcomer Ockert Erasmus.
After the loss of Kannemeyer the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. Summers scored a quick 84 runs off 70 balls hitting nine boundaries and five sixes in the process.
Paulse took another three wickets to end the day with figures of 6/31 in seven overs.
Erasmus, another debutant and Boland u.19 Schools player took 4/41 in 9,3 overs with his spin bowling.
The bowlers were assisted by great fielding with the fielders holding on to catches that came their way.
The visitors were bowled out for a 134 runs in 31,3 overs and giving Novel Paarl Cricket Club’s 1st XI a win by 38 runs.
It seems that Novel Paarl has a bright season ahead of them with this bunch exciting talented youngsters in their teams.
The second team travelled to Vredenburg where they secured a two wicket victory.
The home team was bundled out for a paltry 120 runs. The only batsmen that showed resistance was G Ruiters who scored 49 runs including three boundaries.
Lindsay Primo (2/13), Hein Adonis (3/9) and Alfredo Adams (2/14) were the Paarl bowlers who made sure that the score board only reflected 120 runs.
The visitors struggled to get to the winning target of 121 runs as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
The Vredenburg/Saldanha bowlers, A Batton (4/23) and J Groenewald (2/18) nearly snatched a victory for them before captain, Graham Adams, with an unbeaten half century secured the win for the visitors after scoring 64 not out which included eight boundaries and one six.
The fourth team beat Khayamandi Cricket Club of Stellenbosch by default after the visitors did not show up for the match.
Paarl’s first team (away) and second team (home) play Brackenfell Cricket Club on Saturday. Paarl IV plays Northdene Cricket Club at the Parys B field.
