Gala to honour young tourism ambassadors

2006-10-05

THE Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU), and Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) hosted a gala to honour the learners of the seven schools that have won the Western Cape High Schools Tourism Competition, on 21 September at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The winning school in the Winelands was Desmond Mpilo Tutu Senior Secondary School from Paarl and received a cash prize of R10 000 from the Provincial Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Lynne Brown.

Students from the winning schools were recently treated to a 7-day tour around the Western Cape to experience first hand Cape Town and the Western Cape’s tourism offering.

The itinerary was structured in such a way that at the completion of the tour, the learners would have been exposed to the various attributes and attractions the destination has to offer.

The competition called for the learners to compile a seven-day itinerary of the province as well as a one-page marketing strategy to sell their product.

This project has also been one of the initiatives used to raise awareness about Tourism Month, particularly amongst the youth in the province.
