2006-10-12

THE third annual dazzling Franschhoek Spring Festival of Classical Music with celebrated stars, presented by the Franschhoek Conservation Trust in association with Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival, kicks off on Friday 27 October.

All proceeds will go to the Franschhoek Conservation Trust, the Valley Music Project and a nominated local charity.

“We have tried to offer as many different styles in the classical genre as possible,” says Christopher Duigan.

“From opera celebrities and virtuoso pianists to a tango ensemble, trio and string quartet, the programme has been designed to appeal to a discerning audience who appreciate artistry spiced with elan.

“Amongst the highlights are, for instance, the Sontonga Quartet and guests - four of South Africa’s foremost pianists and a leading clarinettist will play four Mozart piano concertos and the clarinet quintet.”

The nine fine concerts will be held over three days in wineries, a church or a theatre.

On the line-up are soprano Zanne Stapelberg who toasts Mozart in this anniversary year, pianist John Ntsepe on the cusp of what promises to be a huge career judging from the awards he has already garnered, and baritone Federico Freschi who will present the songs you love from opera, the musicals and Cole Porter.

Pianist Christopher Duigan will celebrate Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin.

Also on the menu are the Cape Town Tango Ensemble, specialists in Piazzola; the Sontonga Quartet and guest pianists Francois du Toit, Nina Schumann, Luis Magalhaes and Christopher Duigan as well as clarinettist Matthew Reid.

The popular Hungarian Trio can be heard and a classical musical extravaganza brings the vibrant festival to an end.

This finale will feature pianists du Toit, Schumann, Magalhaes and Duigan breaking in a brand new piano at the Barnyard Theatre with musical fireworks as each shows off his or her expertise and energy in a repertoire that will dazzle as each tries to outplay the other!

Concerts take place in the Barnyard Theatre and the historic NGK Church, while concerts with dinner or lunch take place at La Grange, Rickety Bridge Winery and Grand Provence.

All concerts are 70 minutes, and tickets are from R60 (some with wine included) to R200.
