Wine sales rise at Guild auction
2006-10-12
WITH prices increasing on average by 9,5%, total sales at the annual Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction rose to a new record of R3,62 million, even though 7% fewer cases came under the hammer this year.
The Auction, in its 21st year, was held at a new venue, the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on Saturday 7 October.
The 44 different wines, equivalent to 2 665 6-bottle cases, were knocked down to 127 local and international buyers by auctioneer Henr‚ Hablutzel of Hofmeyr Mills, at an average price of R1 428 per case.
Speaking after the Auction, Gary Jordan, owner of Jordan Winery and Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) attributed the high prices to the ever-improving quality of the Auction wines and the ongoing marketing of CWG wines in local and international markets.
Alan Pick, representing his two restaurants on Sandton’s Nelson Mandela Square, The Butcher Shop & Grill and Lekgotla, and his off-licence, Vintages, was the top buyer at the Auction with purchases totalling R1 004 500.
