Shop in flames
2006-10-19
NUMEROUS shops in Lady Grey Street escaped damage on Friday morning, when a herbal shop went up in flames above Pep Stores.
The fire broke out shortly after 10:30 in the storage room of the office of “Dr Moses”, where he practises as an astrologer and herbalist.
The room was filled with dried plants and roots which are used as herbal remedies for various problems.
These goods are extremely flammable and flames billowed out of the broken windows of the building.
This is the second time in precisely two years that the Congolese “Dr Moses’s” storeroom has gone up in flames.
The quick response of the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading to other parts of the building but the building had to be evacuated due to the smoke that had engulfed the building.
A neighbouring hair salon, Dolly’s, moved their clients to the pavement outside the building, where they continued business as usual.
Owner, Dolly Mathews said that they realised there was a fire when smoke started billlowing into her salon.
“We could hardly breathe and our eyes were burning like fire.”
Another shop, Kara’s Bridal shop, suffered smoke damage, with hundreds of rands’ worth of wedding gowns being damaged by smoke.
According to Dr Moses, the fire was caused by an electrical fault, but according to the fire department, this has not yet been proven.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
