Gutsy performance gives Paarl victory
2006-10-19
THE first cricket team of Paarl Cricket Club bounced back this weekend with a well-deserved win over their visitors of Stellenbosch.
The Novel Paarl team restricted Stellenbosch & Districts to 179/9. Allister Pool (30 4x6), Ashley Dhelmini (31 4x3) and Anwell Newman (42 4x2, 6x4) were the only players to impress with the bat.
All the Paarl bowlers contributed to ripping the batting line-up apart, with Godfrey Stevens (3/37), Ockert Erasmus (3/48) and Lyndon Fredericks (2/17) the main wicket takers.
For the second week in a row, the Paarl batsmen struggled as they lost four wickets with only 40 runs on the board.
Captain Lynal Jansen (40 4x3, 6x1) tried to steady the innings, but when he lost his wicket with the score on 116/7 in the 42nd over, things again looked bleak for the home team.
Ultalyn Ernstzen (34 not out 4x3, 6x2) and Alfredo Adams (37 not out 4x3) secured the match in the 54th over with an unbeaten partnership of 73 runs for the eighth wicket.
Brendan Layman (3/19) and Nathan Vermeulen (2/46) were the bowlers who troubled the Paarl batsmen.
Paarl II travelled to Idas Valley to play Stellenbosch & Districts II.
The visitors could only manage to score 193/ 6, with captain Graham Adams (71 4x5) impressing with the bat. He was ably assisted by Cameron Cupido (53 4x3).
Morné Arendse 5/39 was the home team’s best bowler.
The home team scored the winning runs in the 50th over for the loss of only four wickets. Bradley Layman (89 4x6) and W Pool (36 not out 4x3) assured the Stellenbosch team of a win.
Simonique Adonis (3/28) was Paarl’s best bowler.
Franschhoek Cricket Club beat the Paarl IV (158/9) by six wickets in Paarl.
On Saturday Paarl I (away) and II (home) plays Maties Cricket Club. The third team hosts Young Peoples Cricket Club at Parys B, with the fourth team playing Hermon Cricket Club at Parys C.
