Move to Ahos shelter imminent

2006-10-19

THE shelter of the One Stop Victim Empowerment Centre being established in Paarl for abused women and their children by the Athlone House of Strength (AHOS), is soon to be complete.

The Ahos staff and volunteers hope to move in on 1 November and run their programmes from this lovely new venue in Paarl East.

At a function held at the site recently, chairperson Pat Martin laid the cornerstone and unveiled a plaque in honour of the Athlone Institute for making the completion of this building possible.

In the new year it will become operational and will offer emergency short-term shelter to women and their children in crisis due to domestic violence.

“It is not only men that abuse women, we abuse ourselves too! I have learnt to treat myself differently,” said Rochelle to a packed hall of people who came to celebrate the Ahos Support, Crafting and Sewing Groups’ tea and exhibition.

Rochelle was one of 17 women who received certificates for completing the Support and Therapeutic Programme run by Ahos.

Trudy Oosthuizen of Waterpoel spoke about the Spring Day “Give Us a Hand” Art Auction that she had organised. A total of R10 550 was raised through this event and donated towards the Ahos Skills Training Centre.

The British American Tobacco Company was thanked for their support and the recent contribution which will enable 20 women to attend a Computer Training Course at Boland College in November.

Women are encouraged to attend the Ahos Support and Therapeutic Crafting Programme, run every Wednesday for ten weeks. It teaches them to view themselves in a new light, encouraged and empowered by one another to work towards dreams that may have been discarded through life’s hardships.

The next Support and Therapeutic Crafting Group starts on Wednesday at 09:00 at the AIT Hall at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre.

Women who are disempowered, isolated, unemployed or who feel they want more from life are welcome. Phone Fiona Brophy at 872-7518 or 083-5124-500 to find out more.
