A SPORTS academy of world class standards will soon be opening its doors in Wellington.

The Fidentia Sport Academy will offer talented athletes a state of the art facility to hone their skills in rugby, soccer, cricket, gymnastics, fencing and long distance running.

The academy which will be located on the grounds of the Hawequa Youth Centre on the Bainskloof road, which is owned by the Federation of Afrikaans Culture (FAK).

A hall offering seating for 1000 people, a dining room, boardroom and temporary accommodation are already in place on the site, says head of the academy, Sean L Friedenthal.

This will be upgraded with three and four star accommodation, an indoor 50m swimming pool, two gyms - one for cardio work and one for Olympic, and indoor training fields for the respective sporting codes.

Trials have already been held across the country with talented athletes being earmarked and offered one year scholarships at the academy.

Apart from sports training the students will also be taught life skills and given projects to complete which fall in line with the workings of the Fidentia Group.

On the academic side of things the students will enroll in courses being offered by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), University of South Africa (Unisa) or University of Stellenbosch, depending on what courses they choose.

World class coaches have been appointed as directors for the respective codes. The directors are Alan Zondagh (rugby), Eric Simons (cricket), Abubakaar ‘Boebie’ Solomons (soccer), Dr Mikhail ‘Misha’ Galoukhin (fencing), Natasha Galoukhin (gymnastics) and possibly Vladimir Kotov (long distance running).

The academy opens on 15 January with the completion of the accommodation aimed at June.
