THE Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Lanquedoc housing project won the merit award for Housing Project of the Year for houses under R80 000 per unit at the annual South African Housing Foundation ceremony at Spier.
The Lanquedoc Housing Project is a joint venture between the Department of Land Affairs, Cape Winelands District Municipality who acted as the developer, Anglo American Farms and the beneficiary community, represented by the Lanquedoc Housing Association (a registered Communal Property Association).
The project consists of 166 existing houses and an additional 444 new houses designed by Dennis Moss Partnership in consultation with the other role-players.
A proud Mayor Johnson points out that in relation to other low-cost housing schemes, the houses in Lanquedoc, are superior in terms of style, quality and appearance.
“The high pitch roof allows for the installation of a mezzanine floor, while additional features include 60A electricity connections (normal RDP 20A connections), internal electricity reticulation for most of the dwellings, geysers, metal taps instead of the plastic used in low cost housing schemes, as well as Iso Board ceilings.”
The higher quality was made possible by a substantial private contribution (including the land) that enabled a better end product.
