Audrey van Zyl back in politics
2006-10-26
FORMER Paarlite and provincial minister Dr Audrey van Zyl, is back into politics. This time however, she has been elected to a provincial legislature by the Belgian Liberal Party. She was elected to the legislature of the province Vlaams Brabant. Van Zyl, a medical doctor, is married to Dr Jeff Valkeniers, who represents the same party.
Van Zyl trained and lived in Belgium for 20 years before returning to South Africa. In 1999 she was elected as representative of the former NNP and occupied the portfolio as minister of constitutional affairs and information in the Western Cape cabinet under Gerald Morkel.
In 2002 she was dismissed by the NNP, following a motion of no confidence that was tabled against her. She attempted to fight this decision with a lawsuit, after which she left for Belgium to get married.
In 2003 she tried to make a comeback in South Africa when she was nominated as candidate for the Nasionale Aksie, but the party failed to win any seats in parliament. Van Zyl then left South Africa to reside in Belgium.
