Safari Race attracts thousands
2005-04-28
ON Monday runners will once again descend in their thousand on Wellington for the annual Safari Half Marathon.
It will be the 18th time that this popular race is staged in the Boland town.
The Safari Half Marathon has consistently been rated as one of the top half marathons in South Africa for the last five years.
In addition to the half marathon, over 50 vendor stalls will provide refreshments to the approximately 15 000 people that are expected to attend the event.
Lots of entertainment will be provided with the main attraction being the performance of well-known local band, Delta Blue.
Although the half marathon is the main event, a 10km walk which last year attracted close to 3 000 entries, will once again be held, as well as a 5km fun run.
Entries for all three events will be accepted at the Sportsman’s Warehouse stores at Tygervalley, Somerset West, Tokai and Rondebosch and the Tourism Bureau in Wellington tomorrow between 12:00 and 19:00, and 09:00 and 17:00 on Saturday.
In addition to this, only entries for the 5km fun run will be accepted on race day at the Huguenot High School fields in Wellington. It is anticipated that approximately 8 500 people will be taking part on race day.
Numerous top athletes have entered this year’s Safari Half Marathon and both Norman Dlomo, the defending male champion, and Bulelwa Mtshagi, the defending female champion, have confirmed their entries.
The 5km fun run starts at 07:10, the 21,1km starts at 07:15 and the 10km walk at 09:45.
