THE first team of the Novel Paarl Cricket Club nearly caused an upset this weekend when they narrowly missed out by one wicket against the students of the University of Stellenbosch.

Paarl scored 240/3 in their innings, with opening batsman Godfrey Stevens and number three batsman, Dale Campbell, sharing a partnership of 173 runs for the second wicket.

The visitors lost their first wicket with only three runs on the board.
Stevens lost his wicket with the score on 176/2 scoring 10 boundaries in his innings of 87.

Campbell, a matriculant at Paul Roos Gymnasium scored a maiden century of 102 which included 12 boundaries.

The students struggled against the spin attack of Stevens, Lynal Jansen and Alfredo Adams after initially taking the fast bowlers apart.

Only Warren Hayward (35 4x6), Gerhard Strydom (61 4x7), Peter Laing (36 4x2, 6x1) and John Loxton (44 4x3) were the batsmen that nearly pulled it through for the home side.

Stevens (5/52) and Jansen (2/53) made sure that the home side had to be defensive in the final overs of the day.

Paarl II hosted their Maties counterparts at the Parys field.

The visitors scored 261/10, with Paarl’s Lindsay van der Bergh (3/35) and Zurich Muller (2/37) taking the wickets.

R Venter (61 4x7, 6x1), L Smit (53 4x4) and I Villet (53 4x6) led the students batting attack.

Paarl started slowly as they scored at less than three runs per over.

The home team could only manage to score 237 runs in 56 overs.
Van der Berg (58 4x8, 6x1), Faghrie Jacobs (30 4x4) and Muller (33
4x4, 6x1) made the runs.

Young Peoples III (227/8) beat Paarl III (224/6) in a closely contested match.

Paarl’s best performers were Semonique Adonis (65 4x6), Bradley
Isaacs (34 4x5), Francois Daniels (38 not out 4x3) and Heinrich Daniels (2/39).

Peoples stars were J Williams (3/49), Brett Mitchell (45 4x6) and Javier Alexander (40 4x5).

The fourth team demolished their visitors from Hermon (50) with seven wickets in the sixth over. Man of the match Jacques Jacobs took 6/30 in eight overs.

Paarl I (away) and II (home) play Bergrivier Cricket Club this weekend, whilst the fourth team plays Easterns at Parys B.
