Chardonnay focus
2006-10-26
THE judging to decide the 2006 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year and Young Winemaker of the Year has just been completed at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl and preparations are in full swing for the award presentation function on 17 November.
This year the category focused on for the senior competition is Chardonnay, with 127 wines entered by winemakers from around the Cape competing for this prestigious award.
The tasters were fairly unanimous in complimenting the wood/fruit balance of the Chardonnays.
Sixty-two young winemakers 30 years old or younger entered the junior competition, open to dry red wines of every description. The current trend among Chardonnay producers worldwide is to make less wooded versions than in the past.
