Sunset concerts a hit
2006-10-26
THE first Sunday sunset concert at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre has turned out to be a hit. Anton Pietersen and Raphael Williams opened the Frank Pietersen Music Concert season on a high note.
These two artists made an impression that will not easily be forgotten - rare talent, seasoned by years of experience.
Anton made a bold statement with the Scarlatti Sonata in A - L 132 Allegro, with crystal clear execution and well articulated runs.
The blending of delicate nuances were masterfully rendered, although the piano sounded a bit mellow for this piece.
I would have preferred a more brilliant tone for the Scarlatti. The Rachmaninoff (Prelude Op 3 Nr 2 c sharp Minor), a very demanding work with its rich, wide and broad harmonic spectrum, made for a spectacular highlight in the first half.
Raphael added a very romantic flavour to the programme with the Cavatina by Myers.
There was very neat and precise playing, not even one single note missed in the repetitive accompaniment in Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Tarrega.
A gentle relaxed atmosphere was created by using skilful combination of works, very suitable indeed for the occasion. The whole experience was inspiring and uplifting.
It’s a pity we didn’t see many learners of the centre or students around. This is what they need after all: role models that practise what they preach.
They received a standing ovation from the packed hall. The audience was very appreciative and while listening to comments I realised they had struck the perfect chord at the right moment.
This is a new concept where they move away from the traditional concert. You enjoy your coffee, tea or wine while relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere flooded by marvellous, magnificent tones created by master musicians.
This is what music is made for. To share, to enjoy, to uplift and to impress, and impressive it really was! - Samuel Haas
