2006-10-26
TOMORROW Morné M Meyer of Wellington is launching his debut CD, titled ‘Freedom’.
The launch will be taking place at the Church of God in Christ, Wellington.
Morné is an accomplished singer who was part of a very committed group of musicians who initiated the Jazz Department at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl in 2000. He presented guitar lessons at the music centre.
“I have a passion to develop young people’s talents and instill an interest in music amongst our youth and am committed to expose them to various opportunities in music and introduce them to the music industry.
“I would like to assist aspiring young artists like myself in getting to the point where they are ready to formalise their music careers and produce their own music, as I know how difficult it is to get to the point of recording and composing your own music.”
Morné is the second-youngest of four children.
“I basically grew up in the church and was exposed to music from a very young age, as my father is also musically inclined.
“From the age of about eight my elder brother and I accompanied my father, Henry, to the Grande Parade in Cape Town where he used to preach the gospel and my brother and I ministered in song. This was the start of great beginnings within the music industry.
“I was fortunate to be exposed to many musicians and was invited to perform at many community events and functions, where I built a reputation for myself in gospel and jazz.”
Morné attended Berg River High and thereafter completed a Certificate Programme at the Music Conservatorium at the University of Stellenbosch in 2004. This course is a bridging course for the M Mus Graduate Programme.
He plays various music instruments (acoustic and bass guitar, keyboard and drums) and performs a variety of music styles (jazz, gospel, pop and traditional African music).
“I also taught music part-time at the Athlone School for the Blind until 2003. I was also fortunate to be part of a team, Jazz 501 Band, that did a music tour in Botswana for a period of three months.
“I performed with various music artists and gained valuable experience in working in a team and learning from local and international.”
Morné also worked with groups of street children at Arend’s Nes, a shelter for homeless children in Wellington.
Tracks that you can look forward to on the CD are Freedom, Perhaps Love, Melody from Heaven, Song for Marvin-Leigh, Classen Street, Abide with Me, Rescue, People of Drakenstein, a mixture of African Jazz Gospel.
