Effects of alcohol through children's eyes
2006-10-26
AN art competition WAS hosted by Ripples, a non-profit organisation, funded by the Wellington Wine Producers Educational Trust, to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the effect this has on our children and the community.
A total of 600 entries were received from schools in Wellington and surrounding areas.
Says Rubin Adams, school psychologist and chairman for Ripples, “The children that participated managed to encapsulate the exact effect alcohol has on the unborn child when the mother drinks during pregnancy.
“Some of the art work cuts so close to the bone that one can not help but be affected by it”.
Pauw Gedenk Primary School won the prize for the school with the most entries and also had four winners in total in the drawing/painting category.
Hillcrest Primary walked away with the most winners totalling six.
They won all the prizes in the Essay and Poem categories bar one, that went to Newton Primary. The remaining winners were from Bosplaas Primary just outside Wellington.
