Gunmen behind bars
2006-11-02
EIGHT alleged robbers were taken into custody after Paarl police forced their getaway vehicle off the road on Sunday night.
The men had kicked their way into a shebeen at the Simondium squatter settlement near Bien Donné farm shortly after midnight.
They held up the handicapped owner, Hendrik Presence (43), at gunpoint where he, his wife and three children lay in bed watching television.
While his wife fled the shack, Presence was pistol-whipped and toppled from the bed. The men ransacked the home and managed to escape with R8 000.
Groot Drakenstein police arrived on the scene within minutes, after alerting their colleagues in Paarl to be on the look-out for the getaway vehicle.
