Suspect in Somali murder beaten up
2006-11-02
A YOUNG man suspected of having been involved in robberies as well as the murder of a Somali, was beaten within inches of his life in Mpokeng Street, Mbekweni, on Saturday.
Siyabulela Ngcine (22) allegedly tried to rob a man at gunpoint when the community took the law into their own hands and turned on him, shattering his jaw.
When the police arrived, they were handed the firearm which had allegedly been in Ngcine’s possession. He was rushed to hospital with severe facial injuries.
The firearm can be linked to the fatal attacks on Somalis in Mbekweni.
The two incidents occured three weeks ago when Abdenasir Fara was attacked in his shop in Mpumelo Road. He was shot in the groin.
Three days later, three men entered a shop in Thembani Square.
They demanded money and fired shots at the owner, Issack Ibrahim. Ibrahim died in hospital.
These attacks sparked fears that the recent violence which has been committed against Somalis in Cape Town, had spilled over into the Drakenstein area.
It is now however suspected that these attacks in Mbekweni were committed by a gang of youngsters, in which Ngcine is a key roleplayer. He has also been linked to armed robberies in Mbekweni.
Ngcine had been taken into custody after the murder of Ibrahim, but was released due to lack of evidence tying him to the incident. The murder weapon could at that stage not be traced.
