Biodiversity and wine
2006-11-02
A SPECIAL wine was launched in the the foothills of Paarl Mountain in Agter-Paarl recently week, to promote and protect the unique biodiversity in this area.
The Nash family of Black Pearl Vineyards released a Shiraz under their new label, Rhinoceros Hill.
This wine is dedicated to the rich biodiversity of South Africa, particularly in this Cape Floral Kingdom on the slopes of Paarl Mountain.
Parts of the proceeds of the sale of the wine will go to the improvement and maintenance of the pristine renosterveld of the Rhenosterkop Contract Nature Reserve which is adjacent to the vineyards.
The reserve consists of 184 ha on the western slope of the Paarl Mountain, abutting the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.
This reserve is rich in floral diversity consisting of the endangered renosterveld and granite fynbos.
The Nash family established the reserve last year and were one of the first members of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, which now consists of 65 members.
The Nash family and CapeNature have now compiled a management plan which includes actions such as controlling alien invasive vegetation, ecological fire planning, erosion control and intensive monitoring of this area.
