Litterbugs the bane of Bain's Kloof
2006-11-02
BRAVO Maria! Your letter “National rubbish site” which appeared in the Paarl Post of 26 October 2006 is much appreciated, especially by the Friends of Bain’s Kloof.
Some years ago Sandra Steytler, secretary of Friends of Bain’s Kloof, wrote a letter in the same vein titled “National Monument, National Disgrace!”
The situation has improved somewhat since then. We have had school groups and business firms tidy up the pass.
Friends of Bain’s Kloof were instrumental in placing new bins at each picnic site after one site was beautifully upgraded by the Provincial Roads Department.
But we need much more than this. We need more people like you who believe that we should rather take our rubbish back home with us.
Unfortunately there are those who believe they are doing their unemployed neighbours a favour by discarding their waste wherever it pleases them, thereby creating jobs for still more municipal employees paid by the taxpayer.
I have on a number of occasions confronted these litterbugs to be told indignantly: “I am a taxpayer too, you know!”
What we need is a massive change of attitude by all, especially by our children, who are so quick in taking on the habits of their elders. Dumping your waste in any place that does not solely belong to you is arrogant and selfish! And do remember that YOUR waste remains YOUR responsibility even in a rubbish bin!
Let us make Maria’s last sentence a slogan to confront all who thoughtlessly (and illegally) dump their litter: It’s YOUR rubbish - please take it home with you.
