Logging on Paarl Mountain
2006-11-09
THE Advisory Board of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve has approved an application from Seidelberg estate to allow a contractor to transport pine logs through Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve via Jan Phillips Drive (south).
The alien trees at Seidelberg are being removed with the assistance of LandCare (a Programme of the Department of Agriculture) to promote biodiversity and minimise loss of natural vegetation (fynbos and renosterveld) on the western slope of Paarl Mountain, above the vineyards.
The route over the top of the mountain is considered the safest and least intrusive route to remove the logs.
The project should be completed by 15 December and all 30 truck-loads will be accompanied by guide vehicles.
Although the pines on the slope are quite dense in certain areas, many indigenous species are still coming up underneath and this indicates that there is a healthy seed bank present in the soil below the pine and that fynbos recovery would be very successful should the pines be removed.
Seidelberg Wine Estate became a member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) in May this year.
