Percussion duo at sunset

Percussion duo at sunset

2006-11-09

A PERCUSSION duo, Cobie van Wyk and Ilse Minnie of the University of Stellenbosch, will perform at Sunday’s sunset concert at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl.

Starting at 17:00, they will perform works by Bach, Klatzow, Zinvkoviv, Abe, Albert and Sejourné.

Cobie van Wyk started percussion at Frank Pietersen in 1994 at the age of 12.

He made his debut performance as soloist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra in 2003 and in 2004 he performed as soloist with the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra.

Cobie is an active member of the University of Stellenbosch Symphony Orchestra, the US Symphonic Winds and the Stellenbosch Percussion Ensemble.

Ilse started with percussion in 1994. From 2001 to 2002 she studied under Prof Klaus Tresselt at the Hochshule für Musik in Stutgart, Germany.

During this time she participated in the World Marimba Competition. In 2003 she was invited to give a concert in Germany in conjunction with the Percussion Ensemble Stuttgart.

Ilse is an active soloist, ensemble and orchestra player. She is studying at Unisa and the Hugo Lambrects Music Centre at the moment.

Ilse and Cobie formed a percussion duo in June this year. They participated in the Stellenbosch National Ensemble Competition in July and were awarded first prize in the duo category.

They also received the prize for an exceptional performance of a Baroque work.

Tickets for Sunday’s concert are R30 available from Frank Pietersen, tel 872-2123/4.

* The Frank Pietersen Music Centre’s Adult Choir had their concert on Sunday with an attendance figure of more then 90%.

They got off to a hesitant start, but quickly managed to capture the atmosphere with love songs and instrumental interludes.

‘The Rose’ by McBroom and ‘On my own’ by Schönberg added a delicate air to the first half of the programme with its light and fragile pianoaccompaniment.

By the way, it was a wise decision to combine the choir with the jazz ensemble. It made perfect sense to have these pop songs accompanied by a pop band.

There were some impromptu items (few golden oldies) where the audience was invited to join in the singing.

I personally have my reservations about this one. First of all, when I pay my ticket to attend a concert I expect to sit back and enjoy the performance.

I also want to capture and appreciate the special moments.
The choir needs to grow to create that special choir sound. The potential is there, the willingness and commitment is there, best of all the talent is also there.

A commendable effort it was to enchant, with lovely instrumental items in between.

The saxophone jazz item ‘Rachel and the Boys’ was really some spice in the pot and it got an enlightened response from the audience too!

Nat King Cole’s ‘When I fall in love’ was arranged for four voices - it was very surprising to hear its full harmonic potential.

This was a successful afternoon with lots of surprises. Well done, keep up the good work.
