Juniors encouraged to compete in tri-series

Juniors encouraged to compete in tri-series

2006-11-09

ON Sunday 12 November Gordon’s Bay will host the fifth event in the 2006 Resolution/Energade Triathlon Series.

Hundreds of athletes are expected to participate in this action-packed event that gets underway at 09:00.

Apart from the more than R100 000 up for grabs during the series, more than R30 000 in prizes will be given away to junior athletes and the schools they represent in the series.

This is in an effort to increase the number of youngsters participating
in triathlons.

In Sunday’s race R500 worth of prizes will be given to individual junior entrants, R1500 worth of prizes to junior team entrants and the school with the most participants will receive prizes worth R1000.

Prizes to the above value will be given away at the remaining races, with the school providing the most participation throughout the series receiving R10 000 worth of sports equipment after the final event on 3 December in KwaZulu-Natal.

Growing the sport and increasing its popularity has been one of the main objectives of the sponsors since the series was first held 12 years ago.

Whilst the number of participants has steadily increased over the years there is not the same number of juniors moving up through the ranks as in other sports like rugby and soccer, according to series organiser Corné Grobler.

“Unfortunately not all schools offer triathlon as a sporting activity and we hope that through the above incentives (prizes) we will encourage more schools and youngsters to participate in this exhilarating sport,” adds Grobler.

The Resolution/Energade Triathlon Series consists of seven events which are held across the country and sees competitors participating either individually or as a three-member team in three disciplines - a 600m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

Schools and youngsters who have not yet entered can still do so on race day until 08:15.

Further details are available at www.energade.co.za and aspiring participants can still enter online for the remaining races in the series.

The dates and venues for the remaining races in the series are 12 November Gordon’s Bay, 26 November Vaal Pukke, Vanderbijl Park,
and 3 December Midmar Dam, KZN.
