Teen's heroin hell
2006-11-16
A MOVING book on a mother’s fight to save her daughter from heroin addiction has just been published.
The book, “My child, from heroine to heroin” was written by Capetonian Alana Opperman. It relates how her daughter, Carla, became addicted to heroin at the age of 15.
Alana did not initially understand why her daughter’s behaviour had changed, but once she realised that her daughter was addicted to this dangerous drug, she battled to save her from death.
She was assisted by various rehab institutions and the organisation Tough Love. In the process the family was ruined financially due to Carla’s frequent treatment and lost contact with her.
After nearly dying from an overdose, Carla finally submitted to going to the Noupoort rehabilitation centre, and is currently “clean” - but she will never be the same carefree youngster she was.
The moving story includes Carla’s version of the “heroin hell” she lived in, and various letters and poems she wrote in her struggle to overcome the “monster” drug.
The book provides support and comfort for parents who are facing the same daunting obstacles and is a source of hope that they may live again while supporting a loved one in addiction recovery.
The book is available from peet@fingerbattle.com or phone Hanchen in Paarl on 082-446-2989.
