Global leaders meet in Paarl

2006-11-16

THE third annual meeting of the Global Leadership Foundation was hosted by former president FW de Klerk (chairman) at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl recently.

The GLF confidentially advises today’s top political leaders, and is to broaden its scope, de Klerk announced.

“The GLF will leverage the experience of the 22 former Presidents, Prime Ministers and Cabinet Ministers from around the globe who comprise its membership, to search for potential solutions to selected intractable, often neglected problems and conflicts,” Mr de Klerk explained.

“The GLF has thus far undertaken projects advising leaders in Africa and in Eastern Europe, mainly on governance issues.

We are currently engaged in developing further projects following contacts with leaders in Asia and the Americas as well as Africa. This work will continue.

“The initial consultation process would be independent and confidential and would be aimed at generating fresh ideas about how to break deadlocks and to promote peace and prosperity and then intervening discreetly with the leaders best placed to make things happen.

“We will of course seek the support of experts on the country or regional issues we will be addressing,” said de Klerk.

“And, should we reach feasible conclusions, we will proactively offer them confidentially to the leaders concerned using the diverse channels at our disposal.”

Among the retired leaders attending were Lord Douglas Hurd (former British minister of Foreign Affairs), Hans van den Broek (former Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs), Bronislaw Germek (former Polish minister of Foreign Affairs), Cassam Uteem (former president of Maritius), Sir Ketumile Masire (former president of Botswana), Donald McHenry (former US ambassador to the UN), Chester Crocker (former US minister of African Affairs), Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro (former president of Cape Verde), Anson Chan (former chief secretary of Hong Kong), and Baroness Linda Chalker (former British minister of Foreign Develop-ment.
