Darts fly at popular tournament

THE recent second Smurfitt-Kappa Friendship Darts Tournament was a huge success with 17 teams from all over the Boland and Western Cape entering.
The teams were drawn into an A and B section.
Most of the local Boland clubs battled it out in the B section with Boland Champions, Independent Flyers, coming out on top in this section.
The teams of Versapak A and ‘Whose Next’ were tangled in a thriller of a match to decide the runner-up in the section.
After being penalised with a point for starting late, ‘Whose Next’ put up an enormous come-back, but to no avail. Versapak nevertheless won this tough encounter 6-5 earning a place in the semi-finals.
In the A section the teams of Call More and Bull’s Eye qualified for the semi-finals.
The first semi-final did not live up to expectations. In a onesided match Call More defeated a fitless Versapak.
Although Bull’s Eye Clifford Stradling (SA World Cup player) and Hannes Nieamand (SAPD World Cup player) led a huge counter attack, they could not stop Independent Flyers from winning 6-4.
Spectacular darts were thrown in the final, but in the end it was the performance of Neville Whitting and Earl Adams that saw Call More to a 6-4 victory.
Victory in the women’s pairs category went to Jo-Anne Meisenheimer and Chantel Faure of Falcons, whilst Whitting and Adams won the men’s section, beating Clifford and Stephan Stradling (Bull’s Eye) 4-3.
The women’s singles title went to Zelda Blom (Baby Shoes) who beat Audrey Arendse (Smurfitt-Kapa) in the final.
In the men’s category Craig Johnson (Independent Flyers) proved too strong for Edward Noble (Versapak).
A total of 71 180-scores were thrown, of which Charles Losper and Adams both delivered seven each.
Denise Nicholson finished with two 180-scores for the women, with Elrico Smith (Independent Flyers) closing on the highest score of 145.
