A rider of the Rhadsport Cycling Club, Reginald Benjamin, took an early lead in the Boland Open Omnium Track Championships which started on Saturday.

Benjamin who was part of the national junior track team who competed at the World Track Championships this year, won the 1500m and 25 laps scratch race and took second in the open elimination race for a total of eight points.

Verdi Farao (Liberty) was hot on his heels with seven points.

In the third position was another Rhadsport rider Lesley Snyders who won the 10 laps points race.

Veteran Morné van Greunen (Outriders) also had a good day on the bike in the open category races. He is the points leader in the veterans category.

In the u.16 category Clint Hendricks (Rhadsport) led the series with eight points. Following close behind was Chad Hendricks (Bellville, seven points) and Avery Arendse (Yorshire) with five points.

The top spot in the u.14 category is shared among Joshwill Davids (Yorkshire), Emile Jacbos (Millennium) and Marc Bradshaw (Bellville) with five points each.

In the 1500m Rhadsport’s Mario Jacobs caused an upset when he and the talented u.16 women's rider Natasha Marang (Yorkshire) broke away from the bunch.

Jacobs was the stronger of the two in the final sprint securing him the victory.

Bradwin Daniels of Yorkshire won all his events in the u.12 category giving him the early lead in this category.

Some exciting racing was also seen in the development categories.

Here youngsters who aspire to take up the sport are given the chance to participate on the track, that is a safe environment, with any kind of bicycle. Young riders interested in getting involved in cycling can contact Ian Goetham on 083-949-4501 for more information.

The next event in the series will be on Saturday starting at 14:00 at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl.
