Rubbish in Bain's Kloof is a disgrace

Rubbish in Bain's Kloof is a disgrace

2006-11-16

THANK you, Maria, for your letter (26 October) headed “National Rubbish Site”.

Four or five years ago I wrote an article about Bain’s Kloof which I called “National Monument, National Disgrace”. Shortly after that we formed a group called Friends of Bain’s Kloof (Maria please join us) but nothing much has changed yet.

Because of the rubbish (once a big box of rotting fish was left next to a picnic site) we found the funds to bring in those bins, baboon-proof bins, because otherwise the baboons pull out and scatter the rubbish. The Municipality assisted us.

This has not really helped because there are worse animals in the kloof: human beings.

A couple of the bins have been vandalized for the metal lids (we had to remove the commemorative bronze plaques at Eerste Tol for fear of metal thieves and replace them with granite ones).

To crown it, two weeks ago, when we had 60 learners from Ceres and Wolseley schools touring the Pass and stopping at places of historical and botanical interest, apart from a horrendous new rock panel of graffiti, and the usual handfuls of toilet paper, one picnic site was liberally scattered with used condoms.

What could we say to the kids? They were speechless!
