Budding artists at Bergendal

AN art competition was recently launched by Bergendal Primary in conjunction with Fairview estate.
The category winners of the Ready-Steady-Paint competition were Martha Mathebula, Marelize Maans, Elzaan Erasmus, Godfrey Diederichs and Carmen Goosen.
They will be spoilt with a fun-filled day including a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, while all the other participants will enjoy a class party.
Fairview will also donate a selection of stationery for the art students. In addition, Fairview will assist in establishing the school’s first music programme with the donation of recorders and will also sponsor the services of a music teacher for the next year.
The competition was held to inspire young artists and kick-start an arts and culture project at the school. The artwork from the talented youngsters was on display in the Fairview tasting room for three months.
More than 180 children from the school took part in the competition after they enjoyed an educational field trip to Fairview for inspiration. During their visit, the kids had the opportunity to taste some of Fairview’s award-winning cheeses, feed the resident herd of goats and enjoyed a tour of the wine cellar.
“It was also a great opportunity for them to be exposed to one of the key tourist attractions right on their doorstep. These kids don’t have many chances to explore their musical or creative talents and we hope that the proceeds of the paintings will assist us in starting a music department at the school,” said the principal, Nabilah Abrahams.
She expressed the school’s heartfelt gratitude towards Charles Back, owner of Fairview, and thanked him on behalf of the school and parents.
The judging of the competition was open to members of the public and visitors to the tasting room and Goatshed eatery. A voting box was placed in the tasting area, where guests could cast their ballots for their favourite artists.
Charles Back, firm supporter of community involvement, said they felt it important to forge relationships with the local community and to involve and support the younger generation.
“As a lover of music and art myself, I think it is very important that our youth should be exposed to the beauty of the arts.
“This was an ideal opportunity to expose these children to their own creativity.
"We hope that the music programme will create an opportunity for self-expression.”
