2006-11-23
THE football team of Mbekweni United FC became the first ever winners of the Mayoral Cup trophy when they beat Parks United by a thumping 10-0 in the final on Saturday.
It proved a day of great soccer action with u.9 and even two veteran teams competing for honours.
Midfielder Luyanda Nombeleko was the star of the day, scoring a hattrick of goals. Strikers Sivuyile Tozo and Elliot Gotyombe followed close on his heels with goals apiece, whilst Xolisani Qambela (striker), and wingers Mandilakhe Qambela and Mfuyiselo Kofi all chipped in with a goal each.
Xolisani also received a prize for being the top goal scorer of the tournament, finding the back of the net a total of seven times.
Despite the large big goal margin which separated the two teams, it was nevertheless an interesting match to watch.
Mbekwnei United took home a cash prize of R7000 as well as the coveted Mayoral Cup, while their opponents received R4500 for their effort in qualifying for the final.
Earlier in the day African Jaguars beat Cosmos 1-0 in the third place play-off to receive the third prize of R3000 while Cosmos got R2 000 for fourth place.
In the women’s final TK Lions/Green Hills took on Lady Hawk United with the former coming out on top by 2-1.
“We want to thank the mayor of Drakenstein Municipality, Charmaine Manuel, for her enthusiasm and dedication in uplifting the standard of soccer in Drakenstein,” said Sithembele Kaba, chairman of both Mbekweni United Football Club and the Drakenstein Local Football Association.
“A special word of thanks has to be made to the sponsors who came on board and avail their funds to make sure that we make the Mayoral Cup a great success,” Kaba added.
Mayor Manuel expressed her thanks towards all the relevant roleplayers in making the Mayoral Cup a success and who will help the tournament go from strength to strength especially in run-up to the soccer World Cup Tournament which will be hosted by South Africa in 2010.
