FRANSCHHOEK winemaker Gottfried Mocke was adjudged the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for his Chamonix Chardonnay Reserve 2005.
Mocke’s achievement follows a rating of 4 Stars (excellent, wine of distinction) for the Chamonix Chardonnay 2005 in the November issue of WINE magazine, in which it ranked as one of the best-value Chardonnays currently on sale.
The winner of the prestigious Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award wins a return flight to the wine-producing country of the winner’s choice and a cheque for R15 000.
Also among the top ten Chardonnay wines entered was KWV’s Cathedral Cellar Chardonnay 2005 made by Tania Joubert.
In the 26-year history of the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Awards, two victories prior to the 2006 award were achieved with a Chardonnay: in 1993 Danie de Wet won with his 1993 De Wetshof Finesse, a very lightly oaked wine, and the other occasion was in 1986, when the category was “Wood-aged White”, the late Sydney Back winning with his 1985 Backsberg Chardonnay.
The competition focuses on a different category of South African wine each year. The categories to be focused on in 2007 and 2008 will be Shiraz and White Blends respectively.
